adoption of the latter would involve heavy expense for connecting telegraphs (see 16th

report § 5). The Commission accordingly recommended an

alternative site on the Ruiru

river, about 14 miles from Nairobi, with the receiving station on the Athi plains, if

it should be decided that the

distance between the stations

could not be reduced below

16 miles.

Major Boys observed that

it appeared useless to pursue the

matter until this point could

be discussed with the Contractors

and as Mr. De Wardt said that

the Secretary did not consider

it advisable to approach the

Marconi Company on questions arising out of the report of the

Commission until the contract

was signed, it was agreed to

let the matter stand over at

any rate until Captain Crawley
